Curated by Luis I Rodriguez, and featuring such diverse artists as XXXora, Eleanor Fogg, Luis Gonzaga Barreira, Katy Wallwork and Luis Ignacio Rodriguez, who deal with gender from different perspectives: gender definition from the social, legal, historic, scientific, onyric or formal perspectives, and in different media: text, video, performance, drawings, painting, textiles, and installation.
What is The Engenderment? How to put in black and white what is not black and white. When you were born they took one look at your genitalia, and decided, in one triumphant (or resigned) cry, that you were a boy, or a girl. And they had plans for you, your name, clothes, colours, toys, professions, partners, income, roles, sports, body language, intonation patterns, legal status, freedoms. You want your singular freedom, freedom to pick and choose from all of the options, freedom to be given all of the options.
How to put in black and white what is not black and white. Not even grey. It is a plethora of colours. They will have you believe becoming one is all about identity, and artists will seek and reach for theirs, or the other’s, in shapes and surfaces, in textures and size, they will name them and place them into boxes, label them and just as they themselves had been, define them.
